In a world of at-home production and extreme competition, there are a vast number of aspiring musicians. To be able to call yourself a professional is something only a select group of people has the ability to do.
For alternative electronic artist The Kite String Tangle, however, the opportunity to make music as a career came unexpectedly after years of dedication.
Danny Harley, better known by his musical persona The Kite String Tangle, lives in Australia and has been making music since he was 10. While he is currently being compared to artists such as Flume and Bastille, his roots are a bit unexpected.
“I was pretty into pop punk growing up. I think everyone dabbled in the early 2000s. Nowadays, I’m a pretty huge fanboy of acts like Jon Hopkins and Brian Eno.”
These inspirations are a little more fitting.
Somewhere along the line, Harley acquired an interest for electronic music, but was still unsure about which direction he wanted to take.
“I started very confused musically so I’m hoping my sound has gradually become more focused.”
I guess you could say that he found his sound, as he is looking to continue touring internationally and releasing a new EP (maybe an album) in 2015.
But, where did this success come from?
Perhaps it came from a single track titled “Given the Chance.” This track allowed Harley to transform into an international star, landing him sets at Coachella, SXSW and CMJ. But for Harley, the success was a bit unexpected.
“It was a huge surprise to me and every time I thought it had reached its peak, it kept climbing. It really was the song that let me have a career in music.”
The track continued to rise, aiding in the nomination for “Best Breakthrough Artist” at the 2014 ARIA Awards. The category also included artists such as Chet Faker and Iggy Azalea.
While the success was unexpected, Harley realized the potential of this song. His realization pushed him to create another successful track titled “Arcadia,” which he featured alongside of “Given the Chance” on his Vessel EP.
“This was the follow up track to Given the Chance so I wanted to make something that could stand up on its own next to that track. I didn’t want to be a one trick pony so having that tune go well relieved a bit of pressure for a follow up.”
The two songs, combined with four other tracks, sent his Vessel EP to the #8 spot on the ARIA albums chart.
Harley continues to be dedicated as he works on his new EP. When asked about what he does in his free time, Harley said:
“I pretty much just do music. I do a lot of production but that’s pretty much music too.”
