Music comes from every single place in the world and it is because of this that new talent is always waiting just around the corner. In this case, Tobu, hailing from exotic Latvia, is a refreshing burst of air for melodic house. Inspired by Deadmau5’s “energy” and “breath-taking chord progressions,” as well as Avicii’s many contributions to the genre, Tobu’s music resembles the fun and energetic works by Richello, Archie, and Steerner, among others.
Speaking of fun and energetic, this DJ does more than just make records. A car aficionado, Tobu is very into recreational drifting and says that, with a “rear-wheel-drive car with [a] powerful enough engine” he would be down to do it more often. On a chiller note, he is also very interested in creative endeavors outside of music, in particular photography. Focusing on evening and morning shots, sunsets, and other scenic views, you can check out his Instagram page for some beautiful and creative pictures.
Going back to his music, however, Tobu is definitely an artist in the strict sense of the word – he enjoys the process of creating and making music. In fact, he enjoys it so much that since the beginning of his career in late 2010, he has opted to avoid live performances and instead focus on his craft; this despite having really grown in recognition as an artist since being uploaded to the “NoCopyrightSounds” (NCS) Youtube Channel. Tobu himself attributes a great part of his success to NCS, “without them, I am pretty sure I wouldn’t be where I am now,” he said. If you want to check out more of his music, Tobu made a tough choice and said that for his fans, his song “Infectious” is one of his favorites, though Sweet Story and Sunburst are amazing as well.
These songs reflect Tobu’s change in style since his earlier, more Deadmau5 inspired, days where chord-progression and minor keys took precedence, to his more current, self-described “much more happy” vibe. Tobu has said this change was deliberate because he wanted to show people he could do something different and because he had heard and enjoyed tropical house.
Although a little mysterious with his goals and future hopes for 2015, Tobu assured us it will be an exciting year. He plans to showcase a bit more of his usual style but also release some unexpected, tropical house inspired, tracks that we cannot wait to hear.
He will definitely be someone to watch in the coming months for some fresh EDM that will both get us through the winter and pumped for the summer!
