Born and raised in San Diego, California, Tristan Prettyman developed her passion for music by playing with her dad’s old acoustic guitar when she was still a “nosy kid.”
Tristan had numerous musical inspirations growing up. “I used to love me some Mariah Carey, Debbie Gibson and New Kids On The Block, but it was Ani Difranco who made a real impression on me; she’s the reason I started teaching myself how to play the guitar,” Prettyman said.
She took her first vocal lesson at age 21 and has never taken a formal guitar lesson. After playing at numerous clubs and bars throughout San Diego, Tristan has had the opportunity to tour with artists including Josh Radin, Gavin Degraw, Matt Nathanson, Guster and many others.
She says that her music lyrically resembles that of Ani Difranco, but asserts that her own songs have always been “honest and blunt, with a side of hope.” Artists that she hopes to collaborate with on future projects include The Avett Brothers, Butch Walker, Dave Matthews, Ed Sheeran, Pharell, Ryan Adams and Sam Smith.
Tristan’s new album “Back to Home” was written, recorded, mixed, mastered and pressed in just three weeks. She wrote popular title track “Back to Home” with the non-profit “To Write Love on Her Arms” in mind. This organization is dedicated to helping people who are battling depression, addiction and suicidal thoughts or are victims of bullying. Tristan said, “I wanted to show that life is never easy, that it’s easy to feel trapped but that everyone is going through something difficult as well. We’re never alone; we always have a choice, and we always have a voice.”
Tristan expressed genuine interest in her fans as she said, “I love…connecting with people, talking with fans. I always try to leave people in a better condition than when they arrived.” She cited “Simple As It Should Be” as a favorite to perform since fans sing it back to her, which creates a pretty special moment. Tristan also handles all of her own merchandise orders, including a personal note to each fan in the packages she sends out.
In her free time Prettyman enjoys yoga, surfing (she placed in the California state high school surfing championship when she was still in middle school), cooking and walking on the beach with her husband and their dog.
