“I never thought I would be in a band,” Kyle Morris of The Unlikely Candidates told TapSongz. Morris shared some background and future plans for the band with us in an exclusive interview.
The band is from Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas. Vocalist Morris started the with his childhood friend, Cole Male. “We were 18 when Cole and I formed the band,” Morris said. “I felt like there was something there from the start, I believed it. We were pretty bad at the time so I am not sure why.” The band eventually expanded to include Brenton Carney (guitar), Jared Hornbeek (bass), and Kevin Goddard (drums).
Morris revealed some hints about the origins of The Unlikely Candidates and their inspirations. “I really liked the Clash – they could be melodic and menacing, which I really liked,” he said. He described guitarist Brenton Carney’s fondness for 80s rock and roll: “Brent was really into 80’s rocks bands, they had the craziest guitar work and big personalities.” Bassist Jared Hornbeek had “toured with his band around the country when he was sixteen so he was hooked from then on.” “Kevin has played drums since he was four, I think he always wanted to end up in a band.”
The Unlikely Candidates have been touring on-and-off for the past three and a half years. Their favorite places to perform include Philly, Minnesota, Atlanta, Sacramento, and Colorado. “We love Colorado, the fans are passionate and we always have amazing shows there. So any of the Colorado cities are great,” he said. When we asked him his favorite aspect of performing, he answered, “Losing yourself in it. When you are doing it right you feel like you are not even there. Just pure fluidity.” Morris also shared his favorite song to perform is Reaction: “It's challenging to sing which is fun.” Morris also told us, “The fans love Violence. They shoot the finger guns on the ‘bangs,’ which is pretty cool.”
They released an EP of six songs called Bed of Liars in February. We asked Morris what it’s like having The Unlikely Candidates headlining a tour right now and what the fans can expect. “So much sweat,” he laughed. “We give everything we’ve got on these headlining dates. Also our buds in Fame Riot are touring with us. They are glam gods and the people love it.”
Morris also told us about the future plans for The Unlikely Candidates. They hope to collaborate with rapper J Fresh again soon: “J Fresh is a great collab, he did a verse on ‘Violence’ that was perfect. I'd love to do more with him,” Morris said. He also revealed that The Unlikely Candidates are working to finish an album this year. For now, they’re focusing on promoting their new single, Violence, while out on tour.
