Experience does not reflect the talent level of Los Angeles-based alternative band Weathers. With an average age of just 19, the group of four delivered a very solid set at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC, opening for indie bands Hippo Campus and Saint Motel. Weathers, a ball of young energy, belongs to the post-Millennial Generation Z: they grew up among the financial crisis with struggling families, and their songs reflect the prevalent skeptical, unsettling atmosphere of the time.
Their most famous song, Happy Pills, criticizes society’s readiness to offer pills as a solution to all problems. The sarcastic lyrics go, “I take my pills and I’m happy all the time,” and although the subject matter is serious, the catchy beat and unique sound make the song viral and enduring: never has it been easier to get a song about overmedication of youth stuck in one’s head. Check out the captivating music video here.
Before performing Happy Pills, Weathers' lead vocalist Cameron Boyer broke down the stage and taught the audience the chorus lines; most attendees were at least casual fans of the young new group, so the excitement was high. The sing-along that accompanied the group’s performance mounted anticipation for the rest of the night even higher. The group eagerly interacted with the crowd multiple times during the short set and successfully to rallied the audience for the subsequent acts.
The band members (Boyer – lead vocals, rhythm guitar; Cameron Olsen – lead guitar, vocals; Cole Carson – drums; Brennen Bates – bass) all sported skinny pants, patterned shirts and stylish haircuts. Olsen sported a bald look cut by a pale white side fringe – the ultimate in hipster-rock fashion. Weathers’ high energy was palpable, with the artists bopping their head up and down in sync and Olsen moonwalking across the stage. Carson was animated as well, moving with his whole body while seated behind the drums.
The young band successfully entertained the crowd with a fun preshow. Be sure to check out their music and follow them on Facebook!
