White Ford Bronco brought the down the house at a packed U Street Music Hall last weekend. The venue itself was phenomenal – two bars split up the hundreds of fans crowded into the standing-room-only DJ hall, an underground haunt that has quickly become a destination for music fans and casual listeners alike on the street known for centering DC’s music scene.
This group was particularly enamored with the band: White Ford Bronco. “DC’s 90s Cover Band” sells out every concert venue in and around the district (while heading up to NYC for a set of shows and private events earlier this summer). They have a cult following: playlists on Spotify, an “about Gwen” website page, active social media profiles. They announced a request from a woman who had seen WFB five times (it was only my third concert, so #goals). And it’s all for good reason – their set is energetic from start to finish, punctuated by jokes on-stage and banter with the crowd.
They’d gotten a few requests for non-90s songs – and people kept shouting for “Free Bird!” Guitarist Diego would respond, “That’s not the 90s!!! We can’t play anything but the 90s!!!” He followed the third comical outburst with, “Okay, guys, we’ve got a special treat – this one’s called Despacito” and hit the iconic first three chords of Justin Bieber’s big hit. His bright laughter cut through the crowd’s confusion as he shouted, “just kidding!” before segueing back into hard-hitting 90s rock.
The set lists are always fantastic – a compilation of 90s-era hits spanning all genre’s. This one included Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Goo Goo Dolls’ Slide, some Matchbox 20, Garbage, and Britney Spears. The 3-song encore thrilled the audience with a last-second rendition of Blink 182’s All The Small Things. A few omissions are tough to point out: when the pool of songs the band can crush is as big as an entire decade, deciding what to include can be a daunting task.
White Ford Bronco delivered an energetic and exciting set, keeping a packed crowd in a destination venue dancing from start to finish. Definitely check them out – and swing by the Music Hall on U Street!
